Red Light District

The Red Light District is is the oldest part of town populated by native Amsterdammers, yuppie-students, Chinese people  (adjacent you can find Chinatown), prostitutes, criminals, artists and thousands of tourists during the day. In the centre of the Red Light District with its maze of narrow streets is the Old Church, the oldest church in Amsterdam, of which the first stone was laid in the 13 hundreds. The church organizes many exhibitions. Next to the Old Church leads a former prostitute the PIC, the Prostitution Information Center. Interested tourists can get information about the history and manifestations of prostitution. In the corresponding Wallenwinkel (shop) you can buy souvenirs for sale. The DJs Red Light Radio can be seen at work behind red-lit windows. Daily they produce shows featuring local and international artists which you can follow live on Oudekerksplein 22: electro and rock to punk and powerpop.

Within the boundaries of the "Old Quarter" are the Nieuwmarkt, the large spacious square with De Waag - formerly the gate, now a cozy café - and the Zeedijk, to a large extent in the hands of the Chinese people. At the Zeedijk is also the Buddhist temple He Hwa, the largest, in traditional Chinese palace-style temple in Europe, which is free to visit. Slightly further afield are four former synagogues combined to the Jewish Historical Museum.
